THE ADVANTAGES OF GOING TO AN ART SCHOOL

McKenzie Morgan

As a senior at Douglas Anderson, there are many advantages to going to an arts school. For one, arts school helps you get your foot in the door. When most of your teachers are, in my case, also professional writers, you already have connections you can make as a graduate. To have the opportunities at hand to create art and have it showcased through the years in various events is profoundly effective in becoming an artist of any type. Watching other students pursue their dreams is also inspiring.

Going to an arts school has opened up opportunities I never thought were possible. There are multiple annual performances for all arts areas, individual arts area performances, and an array of tools to help perfect the art a student is studying. There’s a lot of professionalism that comes with being an arts student. I learn techniques that I otherwise wouldn’t learn until taking the same courses at a college level. I’m expected to perform at a capability that goes beyond just being able to hold a pencil.

Arts schools are not a sham, nor are they just to enforce students with higher test scores to broaden their horizons. Almost everyone I’ve met through school has been extremely proud to be going to DA, and fully inspired to continue their life as an artist. There’s a lot of passionate energy that I feel every day as I walk through the halls.  My school has incredible students that balance both their academic and arts interests while being fully immersed in the things they love.

WELCOME TO THE BANDWAGON EFFECT FAMILY KENZIE!!!!

Fitz Pullins

McKenzie Morgan is a creative writing senior at DA, loves writing poetry, listening to music, and is editor in chief of The Artisan. She aims to be a journalist in the future, and hopefully work with design. She has a love for the arts in general enjoying drawing, painting, and calligraphy in her free time. She is definitely a helpful addition to the team.  Welcome KENZIE!!!!

She guides with a gentle paw and cares deeply about her friends at work and the customers who choose Bold Bean as their coffee home. They say you can't choose family but sometimes there are people that really make you feel at home. Erin Lee is a human happy machine and it's clear that she is a huge part of the positive mojo that bounces off the walls in Bold Bean.

Q & A

What's one thing you will never wear again?

SKORTS

What's one thing you will never stop wearing?

JORTS

How does your life influence your style?

I would say that I favor practical individuality. I love the idea of utility mixed with subtle hints of extraordinary. I refuse to compromise comfort and I appreciate the creativity it takes to add edge to such a simple idea. Overall I love the notion that fashion is not about what you wear but how you wear it. It's about confidently being able to display the true you. With that said, I'd say Riverside has a pretty good idea of who we all are.

If you don't know, now you know! Bold Bean sits in the center of a quaint little annex of Historic Five Points. Stockton Street at the intersection of Post St. hosts a variety of restaurants and shops to delight the senses.

Bold Bean may not have been the first shop to open on the Stockton St. strip but it is arguably the hippest. The shop draws some of the most intersting Jacksonvillians. Bold Bean literally infused a dose of energy and life into the block and the whole Five Points area. Since day one Bold Bean has been a go-to spot when gearing up for the day with a warm cup of house-roasted coffee or a place to relax with friends. It is a hub of our community, a meeting place, a music hall, watering hole, art gallery and safe space for all. If you’ve never been to Bold Bean, stop what you’re doing! Go there and TREAT YO’SELF to a cup of their addictive brew!

FASHION?? IN JAX??.... A CHANGE IS COMING!!!

Fitz Pullins

Jacksonville is not particularly known as a fashionable city. We tend to fly under the radar. However, we are saturated and heavily involved in other mediums. For instance, Art. Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.   Now, let's think about this for a minute........ keywords being visual form, beauty , and emotional power.   I don't know about you, but I strongly feel that way towards fashion. Its a form of art and evokes emotion, whether its a self esteem boost ( sidenote: feeling myself by Nicki & Baby B.. instant ego stroke. ) or someone checking you out.  Now that we have established that fashion is indeed, a form of art. Jacksonville, get ready for some REAL fashion. We are about to make some progressive history. A CHANGE IS COMING!! Starting out with my talented BFF Meester (inside joke peeps) BOBBYK . He has teamed up with Perversion Magazine. To give Jacksonville a taste of his many talents. Be sure to come out on September 4th @730pm to Perversion + Bobby K Kontrast Fashion Show  located at 1037 Park St. 32205. This is something you should not miss. Following the show, is a Soul-Themed Dance party featuring local celeb Dj's Wes Reed + Matt Caudler . Click on the link to purchase your    Presale tickets: $10 at https://squareup.com/market/perversion-llc/perversion-bobby-k-fashion-show-ticket   . Next, Yours truly will be curating a Fashion show at MOCA on October 7th @730. The show will take place during Art Walk in the atrium. This show will be featuring looks inspired by this year's Contemporaries NYE333 Theme. As an adding bonus, I will be designing a dress for the grand finale. To find out more details. Please sign up for email updates at www.fitzpullins.com . Also, be on the look out for updates on upcoming event on our page . YOU'RE UP.... Let's see what your working with!

YOU'RE UP.... Let's see what your working with!

Now that I have covered all the info. You might be asking yourself... what in the hell do I wear to something like this. In a nutshell: Be creative. Step outside of your comfort zone. Have fun with it. This may not be enough info for all of the newcomers, so I provide a few tips:

  • Please keep it sophisticated, not slutty. We need to work on taste here folks. It's one thing to wear a tasteful mini, but another to some everything your working with. Please leave something to the imagination... PLEASE!! Try stepping outside of your comfort zone. Take this look for example, mixing patterns. ( This may be a lil too much for some, but try with just a top or skrit.) Although, they are different patterns. They complement each other.

  • Basic blacks. Been there..done that..got the t-shrit. Instead of wearing your simple favorite black on black look. Whether its that same cocktail dress or favorite tee w/jeans. Up the ante with some texture and movement. Like this leather pleated skirt. Put this on, and your milkshake will definitely bring all the boys/girls to the yard.
Make sure you wear it and it does not wear you.

Make sure you wear it and it does not wear you.

  • If all else fails, stick to a clean tailored look. If you are not ready to take the plunge, just keep it simple with some color blocking using this seasons Pantone colors. Please, whatever you do, make sure its fits.Top it off with a statement piece.  Ask a friend who's closet you wish you had, for help. This also applies to the guys as well.

  • Final tip: Your best accessory is your friend or group your going with. It's always more fun and less stressful with your partner in crime. Friends are the BEST accessory to always have. They will give their honest opinion. Plus, they won't let you go out looking like anything. Stay calm and have confidence. Step out of your comfort zone, but always remember, you're YOU. XoFitz<3

Belts are the new "it" Accessory

Dana Rogo

When we think about belts, the first thing that pops into our mind is "a belt is used to hold up our pants". The belt ensures that your pants won't fall down and accents your outfit. This comment holds true for the most part however, as we transition into Fall, belts are the new "it" accessory. Women may not need belts in the way that men do but that doesn't mean we should dismiss the accessory. In fact, a belt helps complete the outfit.

A belt can add a polished look when your blouse is tucked into your jeans. It can give you a waist and a beautiful figure when paired with a dress. A belt can also help dress up a cocktail dress or dress down a flowy dress depending on how you style it. Because of the high demand of this accessory, you can grab some great finds at your favorite stores (including Fitz Pullins Inventory Room!).

Some new styles for the Fall are rose gold chain belts, Gucci and Hermes leather belts with metal hardware, and slim belts with sleek buckles. When we shop, we tend to ask ourselves, "What else can I wear with this?" Luckily, these belts are transition pieces and can add a little extra any way you chose to style it.

NYFW: Men's

Deant'e-Jamal Felton

Written by D. Jamal Felton (The Bandwagon Effect Content Contributor)

For those of you who weren't aware, this week we welcomed the long awaited first annual New York Mens Fashion Week. With participation from the likes of Thom Browne, Michael Bastian, Rag & Bone, and more, the initial NYFWM was inspiring and we can't wait for next year's edition.

Below is a highlight video from the week:

I think it's safe to say that this Men's Fashion Week will set the bar pretty high for future weeks!

Tips for Styling the Basic Tee

Deant'e-Jamal Felton

Written by D. Jamal Felton (The Bandwagon Effect Content Contributor)

We all have those mornings where nothing is going as planned, time is fleeting and on top of all that we just can't muster up the energy to put any apparent effort into our outfit. Well thank God for basic tee's. Here are a couple tips and tricks to easily styling a basic tee without looking basic.

1. The Classic Way

Unknown-1.jpeg

Check out this girl's cheeky spin on the classic White Tee & Jeans look which never seems to go out of style. She offsets this great off-white, oversized tee with these fitted high-waisted denim shorts that are great for elongating the legs, which in this case, is necessary per her very tall, snake-skin boots that give this otherwise simple look that extra "umph". Notice how she opted for a nice and sleek ponytail which allows for her shoes to be main attraction of her outfit and eliminates any extra fuss.

2. The Casual & Care-Free Way

When you see the ever-trendy Pop-Culture Goddess, Beyonce, wearing something new you ask no questions. You just figure out how you can wear it too, and fortunately enough for you this ironic "Kale" tee is available right here courtesy of the Inventory Room. bey kept it pretty casual and care-free in this outfit with a beanie, her sleeves rolled up, and a well-fitted pair of jeans no doubt. Notice how (even though the pictures's in black and white) we can tell that she opted for a bold lip in order to refrain from looking like an ultra slouch.

3. The Creative Way

What I love most about this outfit is the creativity. This young lady takes a basic tan scoop-neck tee and tucks the front right half of the shirt into her pants for the illusion of an asymmetric hem line immediately transforming the otherwise basic shirt into something modern and chic. Continuing with the modern and chic theme, she then paired the shirt with these liquid-leather pants which steps the outfit up another level and makes it evening appropriate. Notice how she kept her makeup and shoes pretty demure taking into consideration the volume of her hair and the boldness of the rest of her outfit.

One to Watch: Melissa Frank and Style Trends for the Fall on First Coast Living

Fitz Pullins

Style trends for the fall are not always what it sounds like.  This year we are finding a lot of colors that one might expect in the spring or even summer in the palette for the suggested fall wardrobe.  I also killed two birds with one stone and added local hair stylist, make up artist and my best friend, Melissa Frank as this month's One to Watch.

This week i joined First Coast Living to talk about these trends and show some ways you can use the new colors to spark up your wardrobe in the Fall 2014.

10710773_759796260760847_3589394496513949362_n

To watch the segment, click on the photo above.  We had a lot of fun and hopefully inspired some wardrobes to take some chances.

I want to thank my model Melissa Frank who is my "One to Watch" for October.  We had a great time putting together the photoshoot of looks and carefully curated each outfit to show how to use some of the fun colors of the fall.

If you are out there wondering how to make this happen and getting overwhelmed looking at the looming closet before you, just give me a call or send me a message and I can help.  We can have fun with a couple hours assessing where you are and where you want to go.  Drink some wine and have a laugh and before you know it, you won't feel like falling on the floor in tears.   Also the holidays are coming up and Holiday party looks are fun and time well spent planning.

OCTOBER ONE TO WATCH, MELISSA FRANK

Here are the looks from my One to Watch for October, Melissa Frank.  She is a Jacksonville enthusiast and always on the cutting edge of what is hip and fun in the fashion world.  Not only does she light up the room, but she dominates with her killer sense of style and personality which engages everyone she meets.  She is professionally a hairstylist a Bella Salon in Mandarin and also is a dynamic makeup artist and a local entrepreneur, selling jewelry and inspiring others to be fashionable.
